An architect is an individual who designs and builds structures and buildings for a living. Architects are also responsible for making sure that the property they are working on is both safe and functional for its intended purpose. In order to become one, an individual must first complete a degree program at an accredited university or college, pass an exam, and then hold an adequate license to practice in that state. In order to get an architectural design professional license, an individual must successfully complete either an associate's or bachelor's degree program at an accredited college or university, pass a state-approved test, and then successfully complete a certified professional development workshop. In order to become licensed, an architect must complete a three-year post-graduate residency at an approved architectural school that holds adequate accreditation. Aspiring architects may obtain their first license by working under an expert architect who has been professionally trained and is in excellent standing.
